Bad Breath (Halitosis)
Many people who are suffering from bad breath, or halitosis as it is called in the medical field, do not even realize that they have it. The occurrence of halitosis is a strikingly common one, as it affects about half of all Americans at least to some degree. Many people are finding themselves frequently concerned with the smell of their breath, and these concerns which are often founded, are making the breath control product industry a multi-billion dollar one. Mouth freshener, mints, toothpaste, unique tooth brushes, immune strips, starter kits, and many more interesting tools are available to people who are dealing with bad breath on a regular basis, or those who would like to prevent it beforehand.
People who are dealing with bad breath must first educate themselves about the problem that they are facing in order to effectively do anything about it. The problem is usually viewed as urgent, since every person these people come into contact with will have to deal with their bad breath odor up close and personal. Most people see bad breath as a serious personal hygiene problem for the person who has it, and typically believe that a person with bad breath simply needs to brush his or her teeth. However, the problem is often something much more involved: A disease called halitosis, which is treatable but that cannot simply be cured.
Since bad breath is typically viewed as a personal hygiene problem and not a health issue, many health professionals do not adequately address the possibility of halitosis. This leaves the market full of people who require commercial breath freshening products and informational articles and books relating to bad breath.
If you meet someone who is experiencing issues with bad breath, remember that it may just as easily be a case of halitosis. Remember also that the person may brush their teeth twice a day and still be unable to cure the bad breath so it may not simply be a hygiene problem. You should also consider the fact that this person may not be aware of their bad breath. If you are just meeting this person for a moment, be polite about the odor and do not refer to it. However, if you know the person well, you might consider politely and privately discussing the problem with them. Even if they are offended at first, they will probably thank you later. If you were experiencing bad breath for an extended period of time and you were not aware of it, wouldn’t you hope a close friend would be honest enough to tell you? The key is to be tactful with your approach.
If you are the person who is suffering from halitosis, remember that this problem is not new or even unique, and that as many as half of all Americans are dealing with the same problem. Educate yourself on the subject of halitosis, and begin experimenting with various commercial products that may help you. With the right treatment, it may be possible to drastically reduce your problem with bad breath.
